E
The letter E likely serves as a shelf-mark or a reference for a specific collection of emblems.
original Latin: "PHILOSOPHIA HERMETICA"
Hermetic philosophy is a tradition of knowledge based on the writings attributed to Hermes Trismegistus. It focuses on the relationship between the divine, the cosmos, and humanity.
A central circular emblem is featured here. Around the border, the text "HERMETIC PHILOSOPHY" is written in gold capital letters. The interior of the circle contains a blue oval with three tiered symbolic images. At the bottom is a white square pedestal featuring a red cross with five red roses. In the center is a white pelican "in her piety," a term for a mother bird wounding its breast to feed its young with its own blood. At the top is an ouroboros, which is a green serpent devouring its own tail, encircling a radiant golden sun.
Rosy Cross
A symbol consisting of a cross with a rose at its center. It represents the union of the spiritual and the physical and is the primary emblem of the Rosicrucian Order.
Pelican in her Piety
A traditional Christian and alchemical symbol of self-sacrifice. In alchemy, it represents the stage of the "Great Work" where the substance is nourished by its own essence.
Ouroboros
A serpent eating its own tail. It symbolizes the cyclic nature of the universe, eternal return, and the unity of all things.
