Three letters to the bishop of Bangor

You tell all sorts of people that if they are merely sincere in their own way, they are as much in God’s favor as anyone else. Is this supporting our interests original: "Interest"; referring to the welfare and standing of the established Church, my Lord?

Suppose a friend of King George King George I, whose right to the throne was contested during this period should declare to all Britons original: "Britains" whatsoever that, although they were divided into five thousand different parties to set up different Pretenders Claimants to the throne who challenged the ruling monarch, specifically the Jacobite "Old Pretender", yet if they were only sincere in their designs, they would be as much in the favor of God as those who are most firmly attached to his Majesty. Does your Lordship think such a person would be thought a great friend to the government? And, my Lord, is this not the very declaration you made regarding the Church of England?

Have you not told all parties that their sincerity is enough? Have you said even one word to recommend our communion The Church of England? Or, if it were not for your church title original: "Church-Character" on the title page of this discourse, could anyone alive conceive what communion you belonged to? Indeed, a reader who was a stranger would imagine that he who will allow no difference between communions is himself of no communion. Your Lordship, for all I know, may act according to the strictest sincerity and may think it your duty to undermine the foundations of the Church. I am only surprised that you should refuse to acknowledge the reasonableness of such a charge.

Your Lordship has original: "hath" canceled all our obligations to any particular communion under the pretext of sincerity.
