Echo, or reverberation, is a wonderful play,
jest, and mystery of nature.
Its origin is marvelous, in that it is born
in the air through the spoken word,
due to an encountered obstacle Gegenwurff literally "counter-throw"; a physical object like a mountain or wall that reflects sound back to its source.
For the voice of the word resounds,
moves into, and penetrates through
the air as a spiritual essence; but when
its path or journey is interrupted and
halted somewhere by a mountain, forest,
masonry, or building, the voice turns
around in the air, and thus an echo
is generated from it. This is truly
wonderful. Even more wonderful is
the effect and art of the echo;
for as soon as one speaks or calls
out, it immediately gives an answer,
and is, as it were, obedient and eager
to comply with and serve man:
