This volume is encased in a striking reddish-brown leather cover, showcasing the high artistry of early modern bookbinding. The decoration features elaborate gold tooling A process where gold leaf is pressed into leather using heated metal stamps. and silver tooling, creating a vibrant, reflective surface.
At the heart of the cover lies a celestial motif: a gold-tooled sun with a human face, nestled within the curve of a silver-tooled crescent moon. This central design is enclosed within a double-lined octagonal frame. To add further detail, the points of the octagon are accented with small floral stamps and the fleur-de-lis A stylized lily symbol, often associated with royalty or light..
Above and below this central octagon, large gold-tooled lilies command attention. The corners of the central rectangular field are finished with delicate, gold-tooled sprigs of leaves, softening the geometric structure of the design.
The entire composition is framed by a broad border featuring a repeating pattern of vines and leaves. This border was created using blind tooling Impressions made in the leather without the use of gold or pigment, resulting in a subtle, recessed texture.. A single, thin gold line traces the very outer edge of the cover, providing a clean finish to the decorative work.
The spine of the book, visible on the left, features raised bands—ridges formed by the cords used to sew the pages together—along with faint traces of gold decoration, indicating that this was intended to be a luxury object both on the shelf and in the hand.
