Alfred William Howitt (1830–1908) and Lorimer Fison (1832–1907) were influential pioneers in the study of Australian Aboriginal cultures. Their collaborative research on kinship and social structures in the late 19th century provided the scientific framework that Spencer and Gillen built upon in this volume.
