I have generally provided original texts in footnotes in those cases where I anticipated a difference of interpretation, where I felt that a direct reference to the text would make the subject clearer, or where the opinions of modern writers have been included.
It gives me the greatest pleasure to express my deepest gratitude to the Honorable Maharaja Sir Manindrachandra Nundy, K.C.I.E. of Kashimbazar, Bengal, who has kindly promised to cover the entire expense of publishing both volumes of this work.
The name of this noble man is a household word in Bengal because of the magnanimous gifts he has made to educational and other causes. To date, he has donated a total of about £300,000, of which approximately £200,000 has been dedicated to education. However, the man himself is far greater than the gifts he has given. His sterling character, universal sympathy and friendship, and his kindness and amiability make him a true Bodhisattva original: "Bodhisattva"; in Buddhism, a person who is able to reach nirvana but delays doing so out of compassion in order to save suffering beings.—one of the noblest men I have ever seen. Like many other scholars in Bengal, I am deeply indebted to him for the encouragement he has given me in the pursuit of my studies and research; my feelings of attachment and gratitude for him are too deep for words.
I am much indebted to my esteemed friends, Dr. E. J. Thomas of the Cambridge University Library and Mr. Douglas Ainslie, for their kindness in revising the proofs of this work, during which they improved my English in many places. I am also indebted to Dr. Thomas for his attention to the transliteration of a large number of Sanskrit words, and for the wholehearted sympathy and great friendliness with which he assisted me with advice on many specific points. In particular, the explanation of the Buddhist doctrine regarding the cause of rebirth owes some of its treatment to repeated discussions with him.
I also wish to express my gratitude to my friend Mr. N. K. Siddhanta, M.A., formerly of the Scottish Church College, and Mademoiselle Paule Povie for the kind assistance they provided in preparing the index. My thanks are also due to the Syndics A group of people appointed to represent a corporation or university; in this case, the governing body of the press. of the Cambridge University Press for the honor they have done me in publishing this work.
To the Honorable Sir Asutosh Mookerjee, Kt., C.S.I., M.A., D.L., D.Sc., Ph.D., the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta,
