The Encyclopaedia Britannica (9th edition of 1876), which omits the name of Professor Galland—one of the prominent original: marking Orientalists of his time—has not ignored Jacques Cazotte, who was notable for his varied life and noble death. Born in 1720 at Dijon, where his father was Chancellor for the Province of Burgundy, he studied with the Jesuits in his hometown. After completing his education in Paris, he was introduced to public life through the Department of the Navy original: Administration de la Marine. He showed an early talent for both poetry and prose, composing songs, tales, and an opera entitled "The Thousand and One Fopperies." He is described as having a tall figure, regular features, expressive blue eyes, and fine hair, which he wore long. At twenty-seven, he became an official in the navy office and was soon sent as a Controller to the Windward Islands, including the French colony of Martinique, which was then, as it is now, famous for its successful women. At these headquarters, he became close friends with Father original: Père Lavalette, Superior of the Jesuit term: S. J.; Society of Jesus, a Catholic religious order Mission, and spent several years in a pleasant and intellectually stimulating career. Returning to Paris on leave, he met a woman from his hometown and an old family friend, Madame La Poissonnier, who had been appointed head nurse to the Duke of Burgundy. Since the child in her charge needed to be lulled to sleep, Cazotte composed the popular ballads original: romances "Right in the Middle of the Ardennes" original: Tout au beau milieu des Ardennes and "Godmother, the Bed Must Be Warmed" original: Commère Il faut chauffer le lit. These playful works original: scherzi, however, brought him more fame than money, and he returned to Martinique shortly thereafter.

During his second term of service, Cazotte wrote his heroic-comic poem, the Romance of Oliver original: Roman d'Olivier, in twelve cantos; it was later printed in Paris (2 volumes, octavo term: 8vo; a book size where each sheet is folded into eight leaves, 1765) and was considered a novel and unique composition.
