Here begins the first book of Secrets, which concerns the essences of things that are immutable, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; and also the book on the service of evangelical philosophy, in the name of Jesus Christ and for the poor evangelical men of Christ.

Solomon says, Wisdom 7: "The Lord has given me the true knowledge of those things that are: the disposition of the whole world and the virtues of the elements, the beginning and the end and the midst of the times, the vicissitudes of the changing of times, and the consummations of the months, the changes and divisions of the times, the courses of the years and the dispositions of the stars, the natures of animals and the rages of wild beasts, the force of the winds and the reasonings of men, the diversities of plants and the virtues of roots, and whatsoever things are hidden and not foreseen, I have learned. For the Artificer of all things taught me wisdom." These things said Solomon, and all these things bear support with infallibility.
