I shall reveal the truth to you more clearly: take wine, not sour?, nor vinegary, nor of poor origin, nor insipid from dung, but very? horrible? [strong], superior, and fragrant, and the best that you can. Distill it four times until you have made better burning water than you know how to make. And this is burning water, for in this day and age, physicians do not attain it. This water is the material from which [it] is cooked, because the knowledge of [this] burning water, since it is prescribed in this book, [is such] that after you have obtained this noble water, you shall construct a good glass furnace—such a miraculous? vessel?—you, indeed, with only a hole above, through which they shall place it and [where] you will see the extracted water through the pipe.
