¶ In the third is taught a new practice of measuring by sight the heights, hypotenuse distancesThe diagonal distance from the eye of the observer to the target; original: "ypothumissale"., and horizontal distances of visible things, adding also the theory—that is, the reason and cause of such operation.
¶ In the fourth is given the proportion and the order of the increase and decrease that every piece of artillery makes in its shots, by raising or lowering it above the plane of the horizon, and similarly for every mortar; it will also teach the way to find all the said variations, or quantities of shots in every piece of artillery or mortar through the knowledge of a single shot. Also, the manner in which a bombardier should conduct himself will be shown when he desires to batter or to strike any visible place.
