At the top right are two technical diagrams of gear-and-pulley mechanisms. The main engraving illustrates a massive wooden crane-like engine mounted on a stone fortification by the sea. A long, angled timber beam extends over the water; from its tip, heavy chains are hooked into the hull of an enemy galley ship. The ship, marked with the letters "SPQR," is being hoisted vertically out of the sea, causing the crew and equipment to spill into the water. On the stone quay, several men operate the machine's complex system of winches and pulleys. One man pushes against a vertical treadmill-style wheel, while others pull on ropes at the base. A large, rectangular stone block serves as a counterweight, suspended from a secondary arm of the crane. The wooden structure features decorative carved animal heads, such as lions, at its joints.
