ROYAL PRIVILEGE.

By the broad & special privilege of the King, granted to Master A title of respect for a learned person or professional, common in the Renaissance. Jacques Besson, author of this present work, for the next ten years, beginning from the day that the printing of this work is completed: all persons are forbidden, of whatever rank or condition they may be, from making, counterfeiting, engraving, selling, or consenting to such actions, regarding both the illustrations original: "peinture". Here referring to the artistic and technical plates. and the manufacture of any of the inventions contained in this present work, without the permission of the said author: under the penalties contained and specified in the said privilege, granted at Orléans, in the year one thousand five hundred and sixty-nine, on the twenty-seventh day of June. Though this edition is dated 1578, the original royal patent was secured in 1569, reflecting the long development and legal protection of Besson's mechanical designs.
