A large, ornate, oval-shaped illustration features a central maritime scene. In the foreground, a large three-masted sailing ship with full sails and elaborate decoration on its stern sails towards the viewer's right. Several smaller ships, including galleons and single-masted vessels with lateen sails, are visible in the background under a partly cloudy sky with a stylized sun. The entire central image is surrounded by a decorative strapwork border featuring flourishes, fruit, and putti-like faces (cherubs). At the four corners of this border are smaller, circular cartouches, each depicting a European cityscape with ships in the foreground. These cities are labeled: Antwerp (top left), Amsterdam (top right), Middelburg (bottom left), and Enkhuizen (bottom right). The engraver's signature "Cornely sc" (Cornelis Boel) is visible at the bottom center of the main image.
