An ornate engraved frontispiece features a central heraldic shield topped by a royal crown. The shield is divided into four sections and contains several charges, including lions standing on their hind legs and hunting horns. It is encircled by the Garter, a decorative band bearing the motto of the Order of the Garter. Four winged child-like figures, representing personified virtues, surround the central emblem. Each is identified by a banner: Prudence is at the top left holding a laurel branch; Justice is at the top right also holding a branch; Fortitude is at the bottom left; and Wisdom is at the bottom right. The entire composition rests on a stone base bearing a French motto. Beneath this base is an oval landscape showing a young tree growing from a cut stump, with a Latin inscription encircling the scene.
original: "TANDEM FIT SVR CVLVS ARB"; this phrase was the personal motto of Maurice of Nassau, Prince of Orange. It symbolizes his growth in power and the rising fortunes of the Dutch Republic.
