The Ancients are now very highly praised for this reason;
Because back then, there were always found to be those
By whom something noteworthy, in art original: "konst" — in the 17th century, this term referred to a combination of art, science, and technical skill or also in deed,
Was brought to pass, which they, for everyone’s benefit,
And for their own great Name, committed to writing,
So that it would be eternally reported at all times,
As having been achieved in such a way. But many ancient writers
Have written much with such a bold appearance,
As if they understood such art, or had even
Performed those deeds themselves; yet they were never even
Present in the counsel. Praise be then to this Stevin,
Who thoroughly establishes how the art is to be used,
And also the method therewith, to which he with his intellect
Has even contributed with counsel and with his own hands:
Stevin, who with his art makes the whole World boast,
Whose highly crowned Name flies high in the
Air.
