THIS [art of] camp measurement original: "Leghermeting" — Stevin’s Dutch term for castrametation, the geometric layout of a military camp shall be of two kinds: First, regarding the method that has been actively used in the camps of the HIGH AND MIGHTY LORDS STATES-GENERAL The "Staten-Generaal" was the governing body of the Dutch Republic during the Eighty Years' War, according to the requirements of their resources and circumstances, of which three chapters will be described. Second, regarding the method of complete perfection, just as the Romans (being of very great power) encamped original: "ghelogeert" — literally "lodged," referring here to the systematic quartering of troops, about which I shall speak in the fourth chapter. But in order to briefly explain the content of each of the aforementioned four chapters, it must first be noted that, since one must know what camp measurement means before starting to measure, the first chapter shall be as follows:
