Seeing that this new method of FORTIFICATION The art of designing and building defensive works for a city or stronghold. is achieved through a new type of Sluices Gates used to control water levels and flow, essential in the Dutch landscape. recently invented—which is nevertheless unknown to many—I will first provide an explanation of them, together with the stabilization of their foundations. Afterward will follow the general method and rule for deepening the Ditches The moats surrounding a fortified city. and Harbors of Cities, which, in the matter of FORTIFICATION, can be executed by the aforementioned Sluices. But because I will take examples from a City of regular shape (as being suitable for the explanation of the aforementioned general rule), and since in practice the application must be made to Cities of whatever form they may take, I will treat that at the end; the whole is comprised of four CHAPTERS, the headings of which are as follows:
The 1st CHAPTER, on the new invention of Sluices.
The 2nd CHAPTER, on the stabilization of the foundations of Sluices and Dodanes original: "Dodanes". In this context, these are sloping stone or timber aprons or jetties designed to protect the foundation of a sluice from being washed away by the force of the water..
