The bookplate features an elaborate circular seal of the Trustees of the Public Library of the City of Boston. It is surrounded by a laurel wreath tied at the bottom with a ribbon. The seal depicts two classically inspired male figures holding torches. They flank a central open book. The book is inscribed with the words Light original Latin: "LVX" and Citizens original Latin: "CIVIVM". Above the book is the word Of All original Latin: "OMNIVM". The full motto translates to "The Light of All Citizens." The surrounding text within the seal reads: "The Trustees of the Public Library of the City of Boston." The dates 1852 and 1878 are printed at the base of the seal.
