To joyfully lay aside your mourning—the garment of sorrow original: "penthêron himation" — likely a reference to the dark clothing worn by those doing penance before baptism—and along with it, the pure [soul] must put away that iron expression original: "sidêran opsin" — a metaphor for a hardened, cold, or gloomy countenance resulting from guilt. With this act, the influence of the wicked ones is sent away from us, for the healing of our transgressions.
Consider how the soul might receive the light; and how it does not flee from it. For if the darkness has been created by your own hand and does not draw near, how shall the light stand within you? Just as the Gospel tradition original: "euangelikê paradosis" — the oral and written teachings of the New Testament handed down to the faithful has been opened to you, consider how the waters may participate in the spirits, so that you may be named a Christ-bearer original: "christophoron" — one who carries Christ within them, a title often given to the newly baptized.
What kind of delight might your name be brightened with, through the cooperation of God? To some, the very thought of this is a pleasant smile; to those who care for hymn-singing, there is a pleasant joy and a precious gift of smooth chanting, with the Spirit present. The angels original: "angeloi" — messengers or spiritual beings and ten-thousand-fold bodies are there, like tongues of sharp glory, like a fire searching for those who are being saved. These things sound pleasant to those present; therefore, make our good calling profitable so that the angels may rejoice with us all.
Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven This is a direct citation of Psalm 32:1, also famously quoted in the New Testament (Romans 4:7), central to the rite of baptism. Because through this boldness of speech, a certain brightness of forgiveness comes to the body and the soul is enlightened. Great is the proclamation set before us: a ransom for captives, the remission of sins, the death of sin, the rebirth original: "paliggenesia" — spiritual regeneration or "being born again" of the soul, a garment of light, a seal that cannot be broken, a chariot to the heavens?, cheerfulness, and the luxury of Paradise original: "paradeisou" — the garden of God or the state of original grace.
