On Dreams (De Insomniis)

[God] has bestowed a proportion of divine grace original: "theias charitos" — the unmerited favor or spiritual gift given by God to help a person's salvation.. The matter is yours; let us consider what is beneficial. See with how much anxiety we expect the forgiveness original: "aphesin" — a release from debt or obligation; the theological term for the remission of sins. of those things in which we have failed. Do you doubt that He will grant you pardon for your sins? Therefore, prepare a disposition for the future. Forgiveness is for the offenses original: "ptaisma" — a stumble or error; used here for moral failings. of those who have sinned. Yet you yourself, do you not forgive your fellow servants even in the slightest? This is an allusion to the Parable of the Unmerciful Servant (Matthew 18:21–35), warning the reader that divine forgiveness is contingent on forgiving others. But when you struggle in this way, be earnest for me; for even under [the coming judgment] place all your earnestness; but also after receiving the grace.
