...of him, we sinners, having believed in good works, as the Apostle In this context, "the Apostle" refers to St. Paul, whose writings form the basis for much of the lecture's theology. says: for his faith original: "pistis" is in good works; and upon these are the good? hopes? to be? from him. For to whom there are evil works and by the choice of will? original: "proairesis" — the faculty of free choice or moral intention, central to Cyril's argument that sin is a result of the will rather than innate nature.;
but only sin? but only sin?, yet it is not death; but only for the one who also has the suffering?. On account of something spiritual; disposed? toward grace after? the fire, just as the fire in the beginning burns the coal; the coal is extinguished, and so the flame is extinguished; by which someone thinks, not comprehending?, that he sins.
This the Scripture says: they give back to those who battle? against them. But they partake in? spiritual things?; and
the sin? for? their sin, from which they shall guard the fire and your [fire] against? the intellect; it shall veil? the illumination original: "phōtismos" — literally "lighting up"; a technical term for the enlightenment or spiritual rebirth experienced during the process of baptism. of the soul original: "psychē". But do you see how, beside the sin, there is zeal, and the tongue, and proofs? that something is your own work?
He is not only an enemy to those being disciplined; but there is a battle and anxiety? of greater things? from you; eyes for those who are my eyes. Let no one? have desire? Specifically "epithymia," often used to denote illicit craving or lust.; and by resistance?, do not choose the moderate path?. For indeed they lie full?; neither let [them lead] you? toward pleasure, and let neither sexual immorality original: "porneia", nor adultery original: "moicheia", nor envy be present among? you.
Whenever one despises God original: "theos", then for the rest, the evil thoughts and the evil deeds? follow; and not only these are a fellow-worker, but also another provides suggestions: the leader is the Devil original: "diabolos" — meaning "the slanderer" or "the accuser"; the lecture identifies him as the instigator who suggests sinful acts to the human mind., suggesting dealings?. But he is not after nothing? incorporeal?...
