In his days The division was for the sons, and the families for the two of them; and it became for them as brick. And for the stone, the bitumen was to them as mortar. And they said, "Come, let us build for ourselves a city and a tower, and its top shall reach unto the height of the heavens, and let us make for ourselves a name, lest we be scattered upon the face of all the earth." And the Lord revealed original: "גלי יהוה" — Targumic reading for "descended" to see the city and the tower which the children of men had built. And the Lord said, "Behold, the people are one, and one language to them all, and this is what they have begun to do, and now it shall not be withheld from them all that they have thought to do. Come, let us go down and confound their language there." And the Lord scattered them from there upon the face of all the earth, and they ceased from building the city. Therefore He called its name Babel, because there the Lord confounded the language of all the earth, and from there the Lord scattered them upon the face of all the earth.

And the Lord said, "Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech." So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. Therefore is the name of it called
