[It should be applied] to the head with nard oil and bear fat, and castor oil and labdanum original: "labbdanu", having been taken together. It is effective for standing on the feet, and with sage water, barley straw, and leaves of laurel and pennyroyal, [and] the stalks of leeks. The patient should be covered with bark in a tub original: "fudis" up to the [castor], in warm water, which is to be closed around the falling [remedy]; also, let a cauldron for the feet be filled with ashes and water, and in a tub [one] should place the feet and legs up to the knees, and place the hands and arms in warm water, and [the patient] should cover the head well, and [he] should remain under the clothes in the sweat. It is effective in winter, just as it is in summer, as is another fomentation for the nose, with the bark of wine original: "cortice vini", with pennyroyal, rose palm; what is it if not from cold ground, provided it is not [applied] to the enemy.
The beard distinguishes the virile sex from women in the members, and it grows above [the chin] in youths. The beard is very decorative and grows in cold temperaments, and it is a sign of the genitals, occupying the space from the neck up to the ears. Women do not have a beard, because they lack the heat that produces the beard. And if a bearded man is seen to be smooth of every hair, he is thought to be effeminate, and he is looked upon with suspicion regarding his courage, and [is considered] a woman in spirit.
The mouth is the instrument of inquiry, and [its] sweetness is for conversation; it is moved among all other features of the body, and men have a small mouth. However, it is elongated
with a large and long opening, just as in the wise; it is round and narrow in the parsimonious. The mouth must remove all beasts and reptiles, and [one should] seek certain things; some mouths are open, which is contrary to nature, as they are like those of tyrants. Taste and touch are common in the heart; therefore, they are not to be held as separate, as it is a sense of all, and it is in the middle of the senses; namely, it is above the others and on the sides of the head. The sense of hearing is separate from the sense of sight and the home, and just as the sense of hearing is above the palate, the tasting is especially in the palate where the mouth consists.
Concerning the foul mouth
If you have a frequent stench, wash [the mouth] with vinegar, the throat [and] the palate, so that you may often hold [it] like an ointment, and use powder and cinnamon. If the stench is from blood, wash frequently with pear juice, or if [it is] from the teeth, wash the teeth in salt and alum, and have the teeth scraped with iron. And if something is decaying so that it itches, [it] should be removed, so that the mouth does not smell; [a remedy] of roots in wine is effective, and [if] one washes the mouth frequently and holds [it] in the mouth for a long time, it will provide a pleasant mouth.
For the ailments of the throat, turpentine resin applied [to the area] heals optimally.
For burns of the throat, when it is burning, diffuse honey and bear fat which [the patient] touches in the throat or gargles. For fissures of the lips, often take goose fat and resin in equal weights, and apply [them] so that the evil may not prevail; it is [the remedy] which is to be applied to those sitting.
The teeth are useful for the purpose of digesting food.
