...but the dialectical reason. However, there is dialectic.
Page 20 G.
What is dialectic? This is what must be taught, even to those previously mentioned. It is the habit of being able to state in speech about each thing what each thing is, and how it differs from others, and what is common among those in which it exists; and what the "kinds" original: "γένη" (gene); also translated as "genera" or categories of being. of these are, and where each of these is; and if it truly is what it is; and again, what are beings and what are non-beings, and how non-beings differ from beings.
This science also discusses the Good and the not-good, and all that falls under the Good, and all that falls under its opposite; and what is the eternal in each thing, and what is not. For it is the knowledge of all things, not occurring at random or through constant change. Because of this, it is a guide that does not wander; having left behind the sensible world the world we perceive through the five senses, it establishes itself in the intelligible world the realm of pure thought and Forms. Having all its activity there, and having dismissed falsehood, it "is nourished in the so-called Plain of Truth" A famous reference to Plato’s Phaedrus, describing the place where the soul finds true knowledge..
It uses the Platonic method of division of the intelligible, and the knowledge of simple forms; it also uses the blending of the "kinds" and the greater "interweavings" original: "πλοκάς" (plokas); refers to the way different Forms or Kinds connect and interact with one another. derived from those kinds, until it has traversed the whole of the intelligible. Then it reverses the process, analyzing until it reaches the First Principle. At that point, it remains at rest, as long as it is in that state, no longer dividing itself among many things, but having become one, it looks upon the whole.
Where then does this science get its principles? Does the Intellect original: "νοῦς" (nous); the Divine Mind. give clear principles? Yes, and the soul, having received them, collects, interweaves, and divides them until it arrives at a perfect contemplation. This, they say, is what must be taught.
Geometry and other logics are for adornment and to provide causes, and they pave the way, but it is the Intelligible that carries the Intellect—which, through the act of dialectic, achieves what it does not think through mere talk.
What then is philosophy? Is it the most honorable thing? And is philosophy the same as dialectic? Or is the honorable part of philosophy dialectic? One must not think this is merely a "tool" for the philosopher, but rather it is already a finding of honorable and kinship-based works. It is as if it is before the Intellect, having come to it. In this way, it proceeds, just as nature has been made to be cognitive.
The base man and the man of science, and the happiness of knowledge—but these are things to be reckoned from that higher place. For you do not know the base thing from itself, or from where you will categorize it, since even evils perhaps have their causes. And other things also through...
