A red leather book cover features elaborate gold-tooled, or gilt, heraldic decoration. The central motif is the combined coat of arms of Henry IV of France and Navarre. It displays two shields: the left shield features three fleurs-de-lis, which represent the Kingdom of France, and the right shield features the carbuncle or chains of Navarre. These shields are surmounted by a large, ornate royal crown and are encircled by the collars of the Order of Saint Michael and the Order of the Holy Spirit. At the bottom of this central emblem is the cross of the Order of the Holy Spirit. A crowned monogram "H" is visible within the lower part of the central heraldic design.
The cover is framed by a double gilt line border. At each corner of the inner frame is a fleur-de-lis and a small crown. Along the top, bottom, and side margins of the inner frame, there are larger crowned monograms of the capital letter "H". Smaller fleurs-de-lis are also placed above and below the central heraldic device.
