...having honored many of the wise and having associated with friends, he called it ancient.
And since these things are most divided, he says that those of the body
are many, and from them the most is requested. Concerning nothing was he heard
except to speak of what is common, as one might say, whatever has been left to him.
For this Form original: "ἰδέαν" (idean), was established so much by him within himself,
so that the spiritual matters of all, the Intellect original: "νοῦν" (noun) that toils,
shall cease in equal measure, even that which he himself possessed. By the
local and foreign scribes, for all these people now
the works are produced; I would not say how many things were sent even to the foreigners
by someone. And those things after these are not a lessening
of what was said; and so he intended not only his own [followers] but also
to lead those in the fictions of the writings; he stood against such ignorance
regarding constant attendance. Not having used a need, to associate
with them; and because of suspicion of the whole, he saw most of these things in the
opinions concerning essence original: "οὐσίαν" (ousian), as many as he also wrote. Of
all those wishing for a reputation even among the common people and some more
firm [reputation], they named it by its permanence, or even the untouchable.
The opinions held with him, which are her honor, not having her very self
only worthily; but these things, for some, to receive with power
the amphibious original: "ἀμφίβιον" (amphibion); a technical Neoplatonic term for the soul, which lives "double life," inhabiting both the physical realm of the senses and the divine realm of the intellect.. But it does not even exist, but through this speaker
they spoke toward him. And as if from a reminder of a cause, the type original: "τύπος" (typos); an impression or model would be
the cause. For to possess those things that are so present, as if they were far
absent, if it concerns the will of existing things. For such things are among the birth-pangs of the soul original: "ὠδινῶν τῆς ψυχῆς" (odinon tes psyches),
and those things whose use he promised for contracts.
Of the things by the writer, I would say nothing, because of the
density. Except that these inquiries are philosophical toward nature.
While we were suggesting the philosophers, these written things, and the
books among them. For most of them appear; by the
remaining, having been woven into our time and this very path.
Then of almost all the others, and of the manner of scrutiny original: "ἐλέγχου" (elenchou); a logical or legal cross-examination
it lies as if in a certain comparison. And when all these things had been so
named, he left the traces original: "ἴχνους" (ichnous) clearly from himself.
Equally it was not unknown, but having received it most cheerfully even among the linens original: "ὀθόνας" (othonas); likely referring to the bandages used during Plotinus's final illness, as recorded by Porphyry., for which reason
one should not perceive the hypocrisy of the man himself; or he even lied about the tablet and
the matter concerning him. That there will be writings of him nowhere.
But if thus he does not speak of reason because he wrote letters, against such people,
both the evangelical ones original: "εὐαγγελικούς" (euangelikous); here referring to Christian authors or critics of the era. and the philosophers who lived in his time, it is necessary
to provide a comparison so that a judgment original: "ἐπίκρισις" (epikrisis) may be placed upon him. But those in turn
who inquired, even he himself is blessed among the gods according to others. Just as in the instance of
the one who published the book, it is very necessary to persuade us, not for all but for everyone,
he has done such a thing. For among the philosophers
most practiced in our time, not all of them [spent] the
first years of their age; nor again even among us.
For history does not perhaps have the same [nature] as the spirit original: "πνεύματος" (pneumatos). Moreover, we do not
honor it so much, nor did I make a decoration of my own philosophical discourses.
And those things which are certainly not on our behalf toward you, because so many
places happened to be ignobly [filled] with the conversations of gatherings, there is nothing
through him for those who lived his life. According to these things, then, one must be cheerful among the many
who have written, if he would not choose specifically through writing
that friends be persuaded. Just as all things happening to him.
Except to share through the useful things, such as he remembered to use with all friends.
To bring those who are with him around [to the truth], while the rest of their affairs
are left to themselves. Thus would I speak of the noble ways.
Plotinus original: "Πλωτίνου"; the 3rd-century AD philosopher and founder of the Neoplatonist school. both to be situated and through whom he is situated, if indeed one should judge
differently toward the folly. When Plotinus had not yet died in public,
the books were brought to completion. For so it happened for some.
