The History of Sebeos

The translation is dedicated to the renowned French Armenologist, Auguste Carrière, author of an unpublished partial translation of the "History of Sebeos."

In a five-page preface, F. Macler briefly characterizes the "History of Sebeos" and its significance, lists the circumstances of his translation, previous editions, and translations, and provides certain other information already familiar to us from the descriptions of the translations presented above.

Although on page 9 he states that he did not use K. Patkanyan’s translation because he did not know Russian, in reality, with the help of A. Meillet, he became acquainted with it (see pages 6, 48, 71, 88, 133, etc.). Furthermore, during the translation process, he frequently used the French translation of another work by Patkanyan 30, which already elucidated certain parts of the "History of Sebeos." Macler is also familiar with other Sebeos-related studies, which he used during the translation.

The French scholar also mentions A. Carrière’s partial translation. A. Meillet advised Macler to continue the work that Carrière had barely begun, which Macler did, expressing his gratitude to A. Meillet. He also expresses his gratitude to Arshak Chobanian, whom he had frequent occasion to consult.

Textual refinements were made during the translation.

From beginning to end, the translation is accompanied by rich footnotes that clarify the source text in both textual and historical-philological terms. Some annotations are of a general orientalist, byzantine-studies, or theological nature, thereby increasing the value of the Armenian historian's work.

The translation was presented to the University of Leipzig as supplementary material to H. Hübschmann’s study, "Über die Stellung des Armenischen im Kreise der indogermanischen Sprachen" On the Position of Armenian within the Circle of Indo-European Languages.

The final part of the "History of Sebeos" is translated, which concerns the historical emergence of the Arabs and their first invasions.

The translation is based on T. Mihrdatyan’s edition, covering chapters 30–38; instead of translating chapters 31 and 33, he provided a summary.
