works. The Hymns of Balai on the Dedication of the Church of Qenneshrin and on Bishop Acacius that follow conclude the book.
This volume, in quarto format, consists of two ancient codices. The former appears to date to the sixth or seventh century, written in a neat Edessene hand with double columns. A colophon added by the original scribe informs us that this first part, in addition to the homilies of St. Ephrem (on Faith), Xystus, Basil, and Isaac the Great, contained three homilies by Balai on Joseph. The third of these, along with the beginning of the homilies of Jacob, is lost from our codex. The latter codex, written in three columns, contains St. Cyril’s treatise "On Adoration and Worship in Spirit and Truth."
A description of this Nestorian codex, completed in the 17th century, is found in the printed catalog titled: "Catalogus Codicum Orientalium, Pars I. Codices Syriacos et Carshunicos amplectens" Catalog of Oriental Manuscripts, Part I. Embracing Syriac and Garshuni Codices, London, 1838. (No. XII.) In addition to the hymns of Ephrem, Narsai the Malian, Barsauma of Nisibis, and Babai the Great, the codex contains one by Simeon bar Zaboe, of whom Assemani records two as existing in the Syriac Offices.
The following codices of the Bodleian Library are described with great care in the book titled: "Catalogi Codicum Manuscriptorum Bibliothecae Bodleianae Pars Sexta, Codices Syriacos, Carshunicos, Mendaeos complectens. Confecit R. Payne Smith, A. M., Hypo-Bibliothecarius" Catalog of the Manuscript Codices of the Bodleian Library, Part Six, embracing Syriac, Garshuni, and Mandaean Codices. Compiled by R. Payne Smith, M.A., Under-Librarian. Oxford: at the Clarendon Press, M.DCCC.LXIV 1864. We have deemed it sufficient, therefore, to refer the reader to this work.
