for it seemed to some that it was translated into our language from Greek, and to others, from Syriac, dating back to the days of the translators in the middle of the fifth century, as the choice of the style of the language and the skillful arrangement are testimonies of plausibility. Still others believe it was joined into one by the Armenian translator from two books: a Greek and a Syriac original. Let one hold these as he pleases, until philology can be said to have decided more accurately.

These books have also been translated into the French and German languages.

After the first printing, having encountered another undated manuscript, although not ancient and not free from errors, we have added in the notes below a few variations of readings, as well as some from the Patkanean printing.
