From the preaching of Thaddeus the Apostle and his departure, and from his martyrdom until the completion of the teaching of Gregory and his rest; and from the apostle-killing King Sanatruk until the reluctant obedience to the faith; and from the rest of King Trdat, the past events and the conduct of the predecessors, and those who stood in opposition to them, all that was written by others. However, we have also set down here a small portion of the order of history, not having neglected to record matters according to the proper order. For our history is of two parts: that which is first, and that which is last. As for the middle part, it was recorded in the writings of others. But so that no gap may appear in the midst of our history, we have indicated it: just as a brick is set into the middle of a wall construction, for the completion of the whole. That which follows hereafter in order is narrated here, along with this.
