had until recent times only a single manuscript of the Syriac version alone, mutilated and incomplete, kept by the Patriarch of the Nestorians. The American missionaries of Urmia had a copy made of it, which Dr. Goussen had copied for the Strasbourg library. It is with his permission that we insert here these passages that we have transcribed and vocalized to the best of our ability.
However, after having read this work attentively, we affirm, for the love of truth, that the declarations—often repeated and very authentic—of Nestorius on the mystery of the Incarnation condemn him himself and at the same time fully justify the decisions of St. Cyril and the Ecumenical Council of Ephesus against him. These irrefutable testimonies are of a nature to moderate the excessive zeal of our scholars who make it a point of merit to whitewash the heresiarch of Constantinople by denigrating the holy Patriarch of Alexandria and the Council of Ephesus!
3º We publish here for the first time a treatise of great value by the famous Martyrius, or Sahdona, on the orthodox faith (653—676). The author explains therein (662—672) the mystery of the Incarnation in an admirable manner. We will allow ourselves to observe that after having examined these ten pages and read attentively the book of Nestorius, one is struck by the great analogy of thoughts, of explanations, and even of terms that exists between the two writers. One would say that Sahdona corrected the errors of Nestorius while maintaining all that was correct in his doctrine. It is to Dr. Goussen that we are indebted for this; he had the extreme kindness to
