ONE HUNDRED GAMES

NOBLE AND INGENIOUS, original: "liberali, et d'ingegno"; "liberali" refers to the "liberal arts," implying games suitable for refined society or a "free" person of high standing, while "ingegno" refers to wit, intellect, or creativity.

Recently devised original: "ritrouati"; literally "rediscovered" or "found," but here meaning composed or invented. by Mr. Innocentio Ringhieri,

Bolognese Gentleman,

and described in ten Books.

A printer's mark within an oval frame composed of palm leaves on the left and a flowering branch on the right. In the center, a nude, muscular male figure (Hercules) is shown from the back, wielding a club against a multi-headed beast (the Hydra). A small winged cherub's head appears at the bottom center of the frame. The words "EMOTIONS" and "ARE OVERCOME" are printed vertically to the left and right of the frame, respectively.

A "privilege" was a 16th-century precursor to copyright, granted by a sovereign or local authority to protect a book from being pirated.
