...the Maphrian, and they found that he had died.
This man of blessed memory was known for his good works, his austere conduct, his constant fasting, his diligent prayer, and his profound humility. He was likewise distinguished in teaching, wisdom, and prudence, so much so that some of his own parishioners bore witness to the following event. While he was being oppressed by the Sultan of Baghdad, Ispahan original: "Isfahan", the sultan sent a harsh officer to him who demanded a measure of wine while the Maphrian was residing at the lower monastery of Mar Behenam in Guba. When he was pressed about the wine, he said to his nephew, the bishop Athanasius Chaleph: "My son, fill the vessels from the well that is in the courtyard of the monastery." He brought an amphora filled with water that had been blessed, and it became the finest wine. When the Mongol original: "Mogulensis" tasted it, he accepted the wine with joy and departed for his own region. This was made manifest to many. Furthermore, when the people of Mardin arrived to take him and make him Patriarch, they found that he had already migrated to the Lord. They buried him in the monastery of Guba, beneath the southern arch, where the Maphrians before him had also been buried.
They brought his nephew by his sister, the bishop Athanasius Chaleph, who served him; he was the bishop of Gozartha modern Cizre.

When he was pressured regarding the wine, he said to his sister's son, Bishop Athanasius Chaleph: "My son, fill the urns from the well that is in the courtyard of the monastery." He brought one amphora, and the waters were blessed and turned into the finest wine. When the Mongol tasted it, he accepted the wine with joy and departed for his own region. This, however, was revealed to some. Furthermore, when the people of Mardin arrived to take him and make him Patriarch, they found that he had already passed to the Lord, and they buried him in the monastery of Guba, under the southern arch, where his predecessors as Maphrian had likewise been buried.
They brought his nephew by his sister, named Chaleph, who used to serve him; he was the bishop of Gozartha and was called Athanasius. Now indeed, through the field of the Arabs, outwardly...
