...the Maphrian of the East; but the younger, Rabban Habib, was later ordained metropolitan. The patriarch ordained the Maphrian Abraham in the monastery of Mar Ananias near Mardin, on Palm Sunday. Both proceeded to the East with honor, and Rabban Habib, the younger brother, served in the ministry of his brother the Maphrian. In the year 1807 Christ 1496, he whom we have just mentioned was ordained.
In the year 1806 of the Greeks Christ 1495, the patriarch Masud of Tur Abdin ordained a Maphrian in Modiad without the command of the bishops of the region, or of the elders or priests—namely, the monk Rabban Malcha of Modiad—and he ordained many bishops along with him without dioceses. Hence, there was great murmuring in the region of Tur Abdin, and they did not want to receive the Maphrian. This was a matter unheard of, neither in ancient times nor in later ones, nor have we ever heard that there was a Maphrian in Tur Abdin, but only in the East, from the time of the blessed Apostle Thomas. Meanwhile, the patriarch Masud strove to have the man he had appointed Maphrian accepted, but they did not receive him; he led him throughout the upper region, but they refused to accept the name of "Maphrianate." A certain prelate of the monastery, John, threatened him not to bring him into Haytam, and Masud was unable to bring him with him. In the year 1800 of the Greeks, the patriarch Aziz Barsabta died in Hesen-Kipha, in the monastery of Mar Zachaei, etc.
...the Maphrian of the East; the junior, Rabban Habib, was later ordained metropolite; he ordained the Maphrian Abraham in the monastery of Mar Ananias next to Mardin, on the Sunday of Hosannas Palm Sunday. Both departed for the East with honor, and Rabban Habib, the younger brother, was attached to the ministry of his brother the Maphrian. In the year 1807 Christ 1496, he whom we have just mentioned was ordained.
In the year 1806 of the Greeks Christ 1495, the patriarch Masud of Tur Abdin ordained a Maphrian in Modiad without the order of the bishops of the region, or of the nobles or priests—namely, the monk Rabban Malcha of Modiad; and together with him, he ordained many bishops without dioceses. From this arose a huge murmuring in the Tur Abdin region; they did not wish to accept the Maphrian. The thing indeed was never heard of, not from ancient times, nor from later ones, nor by us, that a Maphrian had been established in Tur Abdin; but only in the East, from the time of the blessed Apostle Thomas. Meanwhile, the patriarch Masud struggled for the man he had appointed Maphrian to be received; but they did not receive him; he led him around through the upper region, but they did not want to accept the name of Maphrianate, and a certain prelate of the monastery, John, forbade him to introduce him into Haytam, nor could Masud bring him with him. In the year 1800 of the Greeks, the patriarch Aziz Barsabta died in Hesen-Kipha, in the monastery of Mar Zachaei, etc.
