And the Eastern bishops received him and ordained him. He was the first Catholicos who was ordained by the Eastern bishops. And after twenty years in which he served in the Catholicosate, he died in Seleucia.

He was a native of Persia, and most skilled in both the Syriac and Persian languages. When a dissension arose among the bishops regarding his election, the party favoring him prevailed. David, Metropolitan of Maischan original: "Maischan", laid his hand upon him in the year of the Greeks 577 (Christ 266).

Footnote 1: According to Guriel, he died in the year of his episcopacy 300, Christ 244. Assemanus states, loc. cit., that the series of Seleucian bishops from Addai to Schahlupha is incomplete.
Footnote 2: In the catalog of Bishop Solomon (Bibliotheca Orientalis, II, 387) and in Guriel's Chronotaxis, he is called Baba, with a change of the labial letter.
Footnote 3: Maischan (Maisan), called Mesene by the Latins, is the name of a region, not a city. Assemanus says in Dissertatio de Syris Nestorianis, 430, "The whole tract that extends below Seleucia to the Persian Gulf is called by this name." It is said that two bishops of the Mesene region suffered martyrdom along with Simeon Barsabae, namely: John, Bishop of Carcha-Mesene, and Bulida, Bishop of Phrath-Mesene. Carcha-Mesene was near Seleucia, surrounded by the Tigris river. Phrath-Mesene is the city commonly known as Basra or Bassora, a noble city of the Khuzistan region.
Footnote 4: Assemanus reports that Papas sent Simeon Barsabae and Saadost as his legates to the Council of Nicaea. It is certain that the name of Papas does not appear in the catalogs of the Nicene fathers. According to Barhebraeus, Papas died in the tenth year after the Council of Nicaea, that is, in 335.
