Noah, son of Lamech, sired Shem. His age, according to both opinions, was five hundred years, and according to both opinions, his total days were nine hundred and fifty years. In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, people indulged in wickedness, permitted the forbidden, and committed atrocities. Noah was a righteous and upright man. God the Almighty informed him of the event of the Flood and commanded him to build an ark, three hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide, and thirty cubits deep. He went into it, along with his wife and his three sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—and their wives. He brought with him from every kind of bird and clean animal seven pairs, male and female, and from the unclean, a pair. He also took enough food to sustain him and those with him. It is said that the coffin of our father Adam was also with them in the ark. Then the heavens poured down, and rains continued, and the waters rose for forty days, beginning on the twenty-seventh of the month of May. The torrents submerged the civilization; the water covered everything and rose above the highest mountains by fifteen cubits. This lasted for a full year.
