And since the ships’ masts cannot be useful vessels without the support of many, even more so is such a great and spiritual undertaking, where many important needs of the help of virtuous men exist. For it is no small doubt to commit oneself fearlessly to such labors, where the suitability of words is necessary, defined arrangements according to the command of established knowledge, bringing with reverence an irreproachable record to the ears of philosopher-listeners. Not adding things that did not happen to the vain growth of words. Not diminishing things that did happen and telling them in short, careless words. But bringing the truth to light with prudent caution. And because there is a need here for much fear...
