Jesus said these things: and went out with
his disciples to the other side of the brook of Kidron:
where there was a garden: into which he entered
he and his disciples. Now Judas the betrayer also
knew the place. Because often Jesus had
gathered there with his disciples.
That Judas, therefore, having taken the band:
and from the chief priests and the Pharisees having taken
servants: he came there with lanterns
and torches and weapons. Jesus however
because he knew everything that was coming
upon him: went out and said to them. Whom
do you seek. They say to him: Jesus
the Nazarene. Jesus said to them: I am.
Now Judas the betrayer was also standing
with them. And when he said to them that I am:
they went backward and fell to the ground.
Again Jesus asked them: Whom do you seek.
They however said: Jesus
the Nazarene. Jesus said to them: I told
you that I am. And if you seek me:
leave these to go.
That the word might be fulfilled which he said: that those
whom you gave me: I have not lost of them
not even one. Simon Peter however:
had a sword upon him: and he drew it
and struck the servant of the high priest:
and cut off his right ear. The name however of the servant
was Malchus. And Jesus said to Peter:
Put the sword into its sheath. The cup that
my Father gave me: shall I not drink it.
They brought Jesus however from
Caiaphas to the praetorium. And it was
morning. And they did not enter the praetorium:
so that they might not be defiled until they ate the Passover.
Pilate however went out to them:
and said to them: What accusation
do you have against this man. They answered
and said to him: If he had not done evil:
we would not have delivered him to you.
Pilate said to them: Take him
yourselves: and judge him according to your law.
The Jews said to him: It is not lawful for us
to put anyone to death. That the word
might be fulfilled which Jesus said: while indicating by what
death he was about to die. Pilate entered therefore
into the praetorium: and called to Jesus
and said to him: Are you the king
of the Jews. Jesus said to him: From yourself
do you say this: or have others told
you about me. Pilate said to him:
Am I a Jew. The sons of your people
and the chief priests delivered you to me.
What have you done. Jesus said to him:
My kingdom of mine is not from this
world. If from this world were
my kingdom: my servants would have fought
so that I should not be delivered to the Jews. Now however
my kingdom is not from here. Pilate said to him:
So then, are you a king. Jesus said
to him: You have said that I am a king.
I for this was born: and for this I came
to the world: that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone
who is of the truth: hears
my voice. Pilate said to him: Who is
the truth. And when he said this: he went out
again to the Jews: and said to them:
I find not even one cause
in him. There is a custom however among you: that one
I should release to you at the Passover. Do you desire
therefore that I should release to you the king
of the Jews. And they all cried out and said:
Not this one: but Barabbas. Now this
Barabbas was a robber.
Then Pilate scourged Jesus.
And the soldiers plaited a crown from
thorns: and put it on his head. And they covered him
with garments of purple. And they were saying:
Peace to you king of the Jews. And they were striking
him on his cheeks. And Pilate went out
again outside: and said to them: Behold I bring
him out to you: that you may know that not even
one cause I find in him. And Jesus came out
outside: wearing the crown
of thorns and garments of purple. And Pilate said
to them: Behold the man. When
however the chief priests and the attendants saw him:
they cried out and said: Crucify him, crucify him.
Pilate said to them: Take him
yourselves and crucify him. For I
cannot find in him a cause. The Jews said to him:
We have a law: and according
to our law he is worthy of death:
because he made himself the son of God.
When however Pilate heard this word:
he was more afraid. And entered again into the praetorium:
and said to Jesus: Where are you from. Jesus
however did not give him an answer. Pilate said
to him: Do you not speak with me. Do you not know
that I have power to release you:
and I have power to crucify you.
Jesus answered and said to him: You would have
no power at all over me: if
it had not been given to you from above. Therefore he who delivered me to you: greater is
his sin. And from this Pilate desired
to release him. The Jews however
were crying out: That if this one you release:
you are not a friend of Caesar. Everyone
who makes himself a king: an opponent
is of Caesar. When however Pilate heard
this word: he brought Jesus out.
And sat on the judgment seat in a place which is called
the Pavement of Stone: but in Hebrew
it is called Gabbatha. It was however
the eve of the Passover: and it was
about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews:
Behold your king. They however were crying out:
Take him away, take him away:
crucify him, crucify him. Pilate said to them:
Shall I crucify your king. The chief priests said:
We have no king except Caesar.
Then he delivered him to them to crucify him.
And they took Jesus and led him out:
bearing his cross: to a place which is called
Skull: but in Hebrew it is called
Golgotha. Where they crucified him: and with him
two others: one here and one here:
and Jesus in the midst. And Pilate wrote also
a tablet: and put it on his cross.
And it was written thus: This is
Jesus the Nazarene king of the Jews. And this
tablet many of the Jews read:
because near was the city
the place where Jesus was crucified. And it was written
in Hebrew and in Greek and in Roman i.e., Latin..
And the chief priests said to Pilate:
Do not write that he is the king of the Jews:
but that he said I am king of the Jews.
Pilate said: What I have written:
I have written. The soldiers however when
they crucified Jesus: they took his garments:
and made four parts: a portion for each
one of the soldiers. His tunic however
was without seam: from the top
woven throughout. And they said one to another:
Let us not rend it: but let us cast lots on it
whose it shall be. That the word might be fulfilled
which was said: that they divided my garments among them:
and upon my vesture they cast lots. These things
therefore the soldiers did. There were standing
however by the cross of Jesus:
his mother and the sister of his mother: and Mary she
of Cleopas: and Mary Magdalene.
Jesus however saw his mother: and the disciple
whom he loved standing: and said to his mother:
Woman: behold your son. And said to that
disciple: Behold your mother. And from that hour:
that disciple took her to his home. After
these things Jesus knew that everything was accomplished:
and that the scripture might be fulfilled: he said:
I thirst. And a vessel was there:
full of vinegar. They however filled a sponge
with vinegar: and put it on hyssop: and brought it
to his mouth. When however Jesus took that vinegar:
he said: It is finished. And he bowed
his head and gave up his spirit. The Jews however
because it was the eve: said: Let us not leave
these bodies on the cross:
because the Sabbath is dawning. For it was
a great day the day of the Sabbath. And they asked
from Pilate that they might break the legs
of those who were crucified: and take them down.
And came the soldiers: and broke the legs
of the first: and of that other who was crucified
with him. And when they came to Jesus: they saw
that he was already dead: and they did not break
his legs. But one of the soldiers:
struck him with a spear in his side: and immediately
came out blood and water. And he who saw bore witness:
and true is his testimony. And he knows
that he spoke the truth: that you also may believe.
These things indeed happened: that the scripture
might be fulfilled which said: that a bone shall not be broken in him.
And again another scripture which said: that they shall look
on him whom they pierced. After these things Joseph
he of Arimathea: asked from Pilate:
because he was a disciple of Jesus:
but was hidden for fear of the Jews:
that he might take the body of Jesus. And gave permission
Pilate. And he came and took the body
of Jesus. And came also Nicodemus: he
who came to Jesus by night
previously. And he brought with him a mixture of myrrh
and aloes: about a hundred pounds. And they took
the body of Jesus: and wrapped it in linen
and in spices: as is the custom
of the Jews to bury. There was however
in that place where Jesus was crucified
a garden: and in the garden a new
sepulcher: in which no one as yet had been
placed. And they put him there for Jesus:
because the Sabbath was entering: and because
the grave was near.
