PROLOGUE
In the beginning was the Revelation, which is the
Word, and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
This was in the beginning with
God. All things were through Him, and without Him
nothing that exists has existed.
In Him was life, and the life is the
light of humanity. And the light shines
in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.
There was a man sent from God,
whose name was John. He came for testimony,
to testify about the light, that everyone might believe
through Him. He was not the light, but
to testify about the light. For it was the true light,
that illuminates every human who comes into the world. He was in the world,
and the world was through Him, and the world did not
know Him. He came to His own, and His own did not
receive Him. But those who received Him,
He gave them the authority that they might be children of God,
to those who believe in His name,
those who were not born from blood, nor from the will
of the flesh, nor from the will of a man,
but were born from God. And the Word
became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw
His glory, a glory like the Only-Begotten
from the Father, who is full of grace and truth.
John testified about Him and cried out and said,
"This is He whom I said, 'He who comes after me
is ahead of me, because He was before me.'"
And from His fullness we all
have received, and grace for grace,
because the Law was given through Moses;
but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
POETS
No one has ever seen God.
The only-begotten God, who is in the bosom
of His Father, He has told of Him. And this is
the testimony of John, when the Jews sent to him
from Jerusalem, priests
and Levites, to ask him, "Who are you?"
And he confessed and did not deny, and he confessed, "I am not
the Messiah." And they asked him again, "What
then? Are you Elijah?" And he said, "No."
"Are you the prophet?" And he said, "No." And they said to him,
"Who are you? That we may give an answer to those
who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
He said, "I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness:
'Make straight the way of the Lord,' just as the prophet Isaiah said."
Those who were sent were from the Pharisees,
and they asked him and said
to him, "Why then do you baptize if
you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah,
nor the prophet?" John answered and said to them,
"I baptize with water; but in your midst
stands He whom you do not know. He is the one who comes after me,
and is ahead of me; He, whose sandal strap
I am not worthy to loosen."
These things were in Bethany across
the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
And on the day after, John saw Jesus
coming to him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb
of God, who takes away the sin of the world.
This is He about whom I said, 'After me
comes a man, and He is ahead of me,
because He was before me.' And I did not
know Him, but that He might be revealed to Israel,
for this reason I have come baptizing with water."
And John testified and said, "I saw the Spirit
descending from heaven like a dove,
and it remained upon Him. And I did not
know Him, but He who sent me to baptize
with water, He said to me, 'He upon whom you see
the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him,
He is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'
And I saw and testified that this is the Son
of God." And on another day John was standing
and two of his disciples.
WISDOM
And he looked at Jesus as he was walking, and said,
"Behold, the Lamb of God." And his two disciples heard
him when he spoke, and they went after Jesus. And Jesus turned
and saw them as they were coming after Him, and said
to them, "What are you seeking?" They said
to Him, "Rabbi, where are you staying?"
He said to them, "Come and see." And they came
and saw where He was staying, and they were with Him
that day. And it was about the tenth hour.
One of those who heard from John
and went after Jesus was
Andrew, the brother of Simon. He
saw first his brother Simon
and said to him, "We have found the Messiah."
And he brought him to Jesus. And Jesus looked at him
and said, "You are Simon the son of Jonah.
You shall be called Cephas original: "ܟܐܦܐ" - stone/rock." And on another day
Jesus desired to depart for Galilee,
and He found Philip, and said to him,
"Follow me." Now Philip was
from Bethsaida, from the city
of Andrew and Simon. And Philip
found Nathanael, and said to him,
"Him of whom Moses wrote in the Law
and in the prophets, we have found:
that He is Jesus the son of Joseph from Nazareth." Said
to him Nathanael, "Can anything good come from Nazareth?" Said to him
Philip, "Come and see." And Jesus saw Nathanael
coming to him, and said
about him, "Behold, truly a son of Israel,
in whom there is no guile." Said to him Nathanael,
"How do you know me?" Said to him
Jesus, "Before Philip called you,
when you were under the fig tree, I saw you."
Nathanael answered and said to Him, "Rabbi,
You are the Son of God. You are
the King of Israel." Said to Him Jesus,
"Because I said to you that I saw you under
the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see greater
than these." And He said to him, "Amen, amen,
I say to you, from now you shall see
heaven opened, and the angels of God
ascending and descending to the Son of Man."
And on the third day there was a wedding
in Cana, a city of Galilee. And the mother
of Jesus was there. And Jesus also
and His disciples were invited to the wedding.
And the wine ran out. And the mother of Jesus said
to Him, "They have no wine." Said
to her Jesus, "What is that to me and to you, woman?
My hour has not yet come." Said
His mother to the servants,
"Whatever He says to you, do it." Now there were there
six stone jars, placed for the purification
of the Jews, which held two or three
measures each. Said to them Jesus,
"Fill the jars with water."
And they filled them up to the top. He said to them,
"Draw now and bring to the master of the feast."
And they brought it. And when the master of the feast tasted
those waters that had become wine, and did not know
from where it came; the servants
who had filled the water knew it. The master of the feast called the bridegroom
and said to him, "Every human brings out the good wine first,
and when they are drunk, then that
which is inferior. But you have kept the good wine
until now." This is the first sign
that Jesus did in Cana
of Galilee, and made His glory known. And His
disciples believed in Him. After this He went down
to Capernaum, He and His mother and His brothers
and His disciples. And they were there a few
days. And the Passover of the Jews was near,
and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. And He found
in the Temple those who were selling oxen
and sheep and doves, and the money-changers who were sitting.
And He made for Himself a whip of cords, and all
of them He cast out of the Temple,
and the sheep and the oxen, and the money-changers,
and He poured out their money,
and their tables He overturned. And to those who were selling
doves He said, "Take these from here,
and do not make the house of my Father a house
of merchandise." And His disciples remembered
that it is written, "The zeal for Your house has consumed me."
The Jews answered and said to Him,
"What sign do you show us that you do
these things?" Jesus answered and said to them,
"Destroy this Temple, and in three days
I will raise it up." Said to Him
the Jews, "For forty and six years
was this Temple built, and you
in three days will raise it up?" But He
spoke about the temple of His body.
When, therefore, He rose from the dead, His
disciples remembered that He said this,
and they believed the Scripture and the Word that Jesus said.
