He who is the Living One and the Giver of Life.
And from the Father He proceeds, and with the Father
and with the Son He is glorified and adored.
He who spoke through the prophets, and in one holy, catholic,
and apostolic Church. And we confess one baptism for the remission
of sins, and we look for the resurrection
of the dead, and the new life in the world
to come. Amen.
Again, the canon of the holy fathers,
the hundred and fifty who gathered in Constantinople,
against Macedonius, the chief of the blasphemers,
he who said that the Holy Spirit
is a creature, and not truly existing original: "ܐܝܬܝܐ" - meaning substance or essential being.
And these are they:
First, that the faith of the three hundred and eighteen
fathers who were in Nicaea shall not be dissolved,
but shall stand truly,
and to anathematize all heresies,
and especially that of Eunomius,
and of Anomoeans, and of Arius,
and of Eudoxius, and of Sabellius,
and of Marcellus, and of Photinus,
and of Macedonius.
Second, that bishops shall not pass beyond their own
jurisdiction,
and shall not defile the church outside
of their boundaries, but according to the
canon, the bishop of Alexandria shall govern
Egypt alone,
and the bishops of the East shall be seen
only in the East, while preserving the
rights of the church of Antioch,
which in the canon of Nicaea are
enjoined, and the bishops of Asia
shall govern only that which is in Asia,
and of Pontus, that which is in Pontus,
and of Thrace, that which is in Thrace.
Third, that the bishop
of Constantinople shall have the honor of precedence
after the bishop of Rome,
because it is New Rome.
Fourth, regarding Maximus
the Cynic, and regarding the disorder
that occurred on his account in Constantinople,
that Maximus was not a bishop,
and neither were those who were appointed by him
to the office of priesthood, and all those who
acted on his behalf
and by his hand shall be deposed.
Fifth, regarding the Tome of the Westerners,
we also accept those in Antioch
who confess one Divinity
of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Sixth, because many seek to change
and to corrupt ecclesiastical order,
by the hand of hostility and by the hand
of slander they plot,
and accuse the orthodox bishops
who govern the Church.
And it is not as if they seek to corrupt ecclesiastical
rights, but
as if they seek to corrupt the good name
of the priests, and cause disorder
to the peace of the people. Because of this,
the holy synod has commanded,
that accusers shall not be received
without investigation, and that they shall not
allow anyone to make accusations
against the governors of the Church, unless
a person has a specific accusation,
such that he is harmed in his own affairs. In these
accusations, the character of the accuser
shall not be investigated, nor
his faith, but it is right that in every
instance his accusation shall be investigated.
