And it happened that when Ananias
and his wife Sapphira heard, they fell
and died. And there was great fear
in the whole Church, and in all
those who heard. And there were by the hands
of the apostles signs and many mighty works
among the people. And they were all
gathered together in the Porch
of Solomon. And of other men,
no one dared to approach
them, but the people magnified
them. And those who were believing
in the Lord were added all the more,
multitudes of men and women.
So that in the streets they would bring out
the sick, and place them on
beds and couches, that when Simon would come,
even his shadow might overshadow them.
And many were coming to them
from the cities surrounding
Jerusalem, and were bringing
sick people and those who were possessed by
unclean spirits, and they were healed
all of them. And the high priest
and all who were with him were filled with great envy,
those who were of the teaching
of the Sadducees. And they laid
hands on the apostles, and seized and bound
them in the house of prisoners. Then
the angel of the Lord by night opened
the door of the prison, and brought
them out and said to them: Go, stand
in the temple, and speak to the people
all these words of life.
And when they heard, they went out at dawn
and entered the temple and were teaching.
The high priest, however, and those with him
called their colleagues and the elders
of Israel, and sent to the prison
to bring the apostles. And when
those who were sent by them went,
they did not find them in the prison.
And they returned, came, and said: We found
the prison shut with all
caution, and also the guards
standing at the door, and we opened
and found no one there. And when
the high priests and the magistrates
of the temple heard these words,
they were amazed concerning them and were wondering
what this was. And a man came
and informed them that: Behold, the men
whom you imprisoned in the prison,
are standing in the temple and teaching
the people. Then the magistrates went
with the officers to bring them,
not with force, for they were afraid
of the people, lest they might stone them.
And when they brought them, they stood
before the whole assembly. And the high priest
said to them: Did we not charge
you that you should not teach
in this name? You, however, behold,
have filled Jerusalem with your
teaching, and you wish
to bring upon us the blood of this man. Simon answered
with the apostles and said to them: To God
it is more necessary to obey
than to men. The God of our fathers
raised Jesus, He whom you
killed by hanging Him on
wood i.e., the cross. Him God raised
as Chief and Savior, and lifted Him to His right hand.
