One? of them belongs
to the soul, and the other to the body. That
which is of the soul is wisdom,
and that of the body is health.
And just as the health of the body
comes from the balanced temperament of the limbs,
so also the wisdom of the soul
comes from the balanced temperament
of the faculties of the soul. And just as,
when one of the limbs is loosened
from its balance, sickness
enters the body, so also
when one of the faculties of the soul
is loosened from its balance, sickness
enters the soul. And just as a physician
of bodies, through various medicines,
brings the loosened limb to its
balance, so also a physician
of souls, through various teachings,
brings the loosened faculties
of the soul to their balance.
And just as a physician of bodies
heals him who has
excessive heat through cold,
and him who has
excessive cold through
heat, so also a physician
of souls heals him who has
excessive anger through humility,
and him who has
excessive humility through
anger.
And just as a physician of bodies
heals him who has
excessive gluttony through fasting,
and him who has
excessive fasting through
food, so also a physician
of souls heals him who has
excessive desire through self-control,
and him who has
excessive self-control through
desire. And just as a physician
of bodies heals him who has
excessive fear through courage,
and him who has
excessive courage through
fear, so also
a physician of souls heals him
who has excessive fear
through courage,
and him who has
excessive courage through
fear. And just as a physician of bodies
heals him who has
excessive wealth through
poverty, and him who has
excessive poverty through
wealth, so also
a physician of souls heals him
who has excessive wealth
through poverty,
and him who has
excessive poverty through
wealth.
