A large rectangular headpiece features an intricate interlaced geometric knotwork pattern (guilloche). The border surrounds a central panel of text. Above the border, there is a line of decorative script, possibly a title or invocation.
God?
in the name of?
He who was
one of the disciples
of the evangelist John,
one of the seventy whom he sent meaning the Seventy Apostles sent by Christ,
and this holy man, while going
to preach in the region of Ephesus,
to receive for himself new glory,
the birth that is from the baptism of water
and of the Spirit; and how the people
of this region left the true God,
and worshipped the idol Artemis,
and how it was spread even to them
to preach to them the prayers
of the holy man, and this
by the power
of our Lord
The right side of the page features a continuation of the text within the decorative border described above.
Who is inseparable from the Father
and from the Holy Spirit; He who fulfills everything,
to Him be glory from all His beloved,
and from Him we shall ask for help,
and from Him we shall receive strength to complete
the word of this history, Amen.
And it happened when John departed from Ephesus,
and went to the region of Galatia, and found there
a man whose name was Isidorus,
and he was a rich man,
and he had many sons, and he had
many daughters, and he had many
servants and handmaids, and he had much
wealth, and no one can measure
his wealth; and it happened when Isidorus heard
about John, he went to him, and fell
before his feet, and said to him: Have pity
on me, my Lord, and have mercy upon me,
and make known to me how I may find the true
God, that I also may be His
servant, and leave the erring idol,
and be worthy of your holy guidance.
