...prayed, and the Lord granted him his request, and they did not come into shame. To Daniel, who was praying, the sacramentum mystery was revealed; his companions were snatched from the fury of the king; even the wise men of Babylon, wicked men, were liberated and saved through the prayer of Daniel. When the prophet considered these things, the good [God] responded with His customary kindness: "Those three just men, whom I heard one by one in their generation, if they should stand before me at that time, not only will I not hear them for the sake of the wicked, but they will not deliver sons or daughters; but they themselves will deliver their souls in their righteousness; the land, however, shall be in desolation¹." Therefore, the prophet agreed with the response of the Lord.
6. The prophet Jeremiah, wishing to inquire similarly, had thought: "Why were Moses and Samuel heard, each one in his own generation, but the Lord covered my prayer so that He would not hear it?" For Moses stood often in the breaking of his people, and even though they had sinned, they were not destroyed; and Samuel obtained pardon for all of Israel after they, rejecting the authority of [God], had asked for a king. When the prophet contemplated these things, the goodness of the Lord went out in His mercy and said, "My Lord, those three righteous men, whom I heard in their generation one by one, if they should stand before Me at that time, not only will I not hear them concerning the wicked, but they will not deliver sons or daughters; but they will deliver their own souls by their righteousness, and the land will be for a desert." And according to these things, the prophet [was] in the acceptance of the building of the Lord.
And likewise, a thought was being thought by the prophet Jeremiah, and he said: "Why were Moses and Samuel heard, each one in his generation, and my prayer [has been] rejected, so that the Lord does not hear or answer? Moses, who stood in the collapse before his people many times, and they were not destroyed when they were sinning; and also Samuel, who spared all of Israel when they did wrong to the kingdom and asked for a kingdom."
