Latin: "New Theater of Machines"
STUDY --- LABOR
An ornate architectural frontispiece illustrates the New Theater of Machines. At the top, a monumental arch frames the Latin title. Below this, a heavy curtain is drawn back by two symbolic figures to reveal a deep landscape filled with various mechanical and hydraulic systems. On the left, a robed and bearded figure of Archimedes stands on a pedestal, holding a book; above him, a banner reads "ARCHIMEDES." On the right, a man in 17th-century attire stands on a matching pedestal, holding a lever near a large wheel; above him, a banner reads "MECHANICUS" Mechanic. The revealed landscape features a stone bridge over a river, numerous waterwheels and mills, people at work, and windmills on the distant hills. At the bottom center, a large, unfurled scroll contains the German title and author information. Two small inset panels decorate the base of the columns: the left contains a geometric diagram of a circle with chords and numbers (7, 2.2), while the right contains a heraldic-style design or machine component.
