Beyond demonstrating from first principles the nature, properties, and moving power of the element of water, as well as its hidden conflict with air; all types of hydraulic and pneumatic experiments are revealed; and a complete system and method for creating machines powered by water and air is prescribed. The "hidden conflict" refers to the historical debate over how air and water interact, specifically regarding the "horror vacui" or nature's supposed fear of empty space.
Part I. Contains the Theory of Hydraulic and Pneumatic Mechanics.
Part II. Presents the Practice of the same, and sets into motion and sound countless water machines, as well as organs and other instruments; it also describes various ingenious devices original: "technasmata" that promise perpetual motion through the power of water.
This refers to Otto von Guericke's 1654 demonstration where teams of horses could not pull apart two copper hemispheres held together by a vacuum. Schott's book was the first to publish these results.
