A GEOMETRICAL PRACTICAL
TREATISE NAMED PANTOMETRIA,
divided into three books: LONGIMETRA, PLANIMETRIA,
and STEREOMETRIA. Containing manifold rules for
the measurement of all lines, surfaces, and solids: with sundry
strange conclusions both by instrument and without,
and also the rare ordinate proportions or bodies, as well
polyhedra as the five regulars, lately reviewed by
the author himself, and augmented with
sundry additions, definitions,
and problems, to open
the passage and
prepare a
way to the
understanding
of his treatise of
Martial Pyrotechnics
and great artillery, hereafter to be
published.
A large heraldic engraving of the coat of arms of the Bacon family (associated with Sir Nicholas Bacon, to whom the work was dedicated). The central shield is quarterly: the first and fourth quarters feature a horizontal bar (fess) below two stars (mullets); the second and third quarters feature three diagonal stripes (bends). Above the shield is a knight's helmet in profile with a closed visor, topped by a crest depicting a boar passant. The entire achievement is enclosed within a highly decorative frame of Renaissance-style scrollwork, floral motifs, and architectural elements. At the base of the shield, a scrolling banner bears the motto "MEDIOCRIA FIRMA".
