In the First Book. It treats the Science regarding the rules for forming the Plans of Fortresses, with their measurements.
In the Second. It shows the Practice by which the Fortress must be built in Royal work.
In the Third. It describes the diversity of the Plans, with the selection of the best defenses.
In the Fourth. It declares the diversity of the sites, & how they must be Fortified.
In the Fifth. It treats the Mechanical Sciences, & the easiest order of Building all the instruments & artificial machines that may be needed, both in time of peace and of war, and how with little force one can control very great weights.
In the Sixth, & last. It treats the defense of Fortresses, & shows all those warnings & inventions with which the defenders can defend themselves, with that greater advantage which can be desired, for the security of the Fortress; & besides this, it shows the order for measuring distances & surveying the Plans, with other particulars necessary to carry out what has been proposed.
