For as far as making myself cautious, I do not lack the testimonies of Princes and other great Gentlemen, who for 8 years now have seen this Instrument and learned its use from me; of whom it will suffice for me to name four now. One was the Most Illustrious and Excellent Signor John Frederick, Prince of Holstein, etc., and Count of Oldenburg, etc., who in the year 1598 learned from me the use of this Instrument, though not yet brought to perfection. And shortly after, I was honored with the same favor by the Most Serene Archduke Ferdinand of Austria. The Most Illustrious and Excellent Signor Philip, Landgrave of Hesse and Count of Nida, etc., learned the same use here in Padua in the year 1601. And the Most Serene of Mantua, two years ago, wished to hear the explanation from me.
Finally, as it is my intention at present to explain operations mostly pertaining to the Soldier, I have judged it to be good to write in the Tuscan tongue, so that the book might sometimes come into the hands of persons more knowledgeable in the Militia military affairs than in the Latin language, that it may be conveniently understood by them.
Live happily.
