A detailed copperplate engraving depicts the interior of a 17th-century forge or metallurgical workshop. In the foreground, a bearded man wearing a cap, a short tunic, and an apron is hunched over, working with a long-handled tool on an anvil or workbench. He is barefoot and shown in profile. Behind him is a large masonry furnace. On top of the forge, a small fire burns brightly, and a pair of large metal tongs lies nearby. In the upper section of the image, a complex mechanical system for operating bellows is visible. Two large, pear-shaped bellows are suspended from a heavy wooden framework. They are connected by rods to a horizontal overhead beam, which appears to be part of a cam or lever system designed to provide a continuous blast of air to the furnace below.
